Robert ‘’Bob’’ Gibson was an American professional baseball player who played 17 seasons in Major League Basketball for the St. Louis Cardinal from 1959 to 1975. Nicknamed “Gibby” and “Hoot”, Gibson was a right-handed pitcher known for his competitive and intimidating nature. He retired in 1975 and was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, he overcame childhood illness and excelled in sports. At Omaha (Neb.) Technical High School Gibson was a star in basketball and track, as well as a baseball catcher. After playing professional basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters for one season, Gibson signed with baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals in 1957 and played with their minor league teams until 1959. He became a fierce right-handed pitcher and was at his best when the pressure was most intense. After his retirement, he served as a pitching coach for his former teammate, Joe Torre. Bob Gibson died of pancreatic cancer on 2 October, 2020.
