Pierre Cardin was a French fashion designer. He is known for what were his avant-garde style and Space Age designs and also a pioneer in the design of high fashion for men. e advanced into unisex fashions, sometimes experimental, and not always practical. He was designated a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1991, and a United Nations FAO Goodwill Ambassador in 2009.
Pierre Cardin was born on 2 July 1922. His father, a wealthy French wine merchant, wished him to study architecture, but from childhood, he was interested in dressmaking. Beginning his career early, at age 14 he worked as a clothier’s apprentice, learning the basics of fashion design and construction. In 1950 he opened a shop of his own and gradually gained a solid reputation as a men’s suit maker. He is hailed for his visionary creations but also for bringing stylish clothes to the masses. Cardin died at the age of 98 on 28 December 2020.
