Susan Margaret Collins is an American politician serving as the senior United States Senator for Maine. A Republican, she has represented Maine in the Senate since 1997. Collins was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996. She was reelected in 2002, 2008, 2014, and 2020. She is the most senior Republican woman in the Senate.
Susan Collins was born on December 7, 1952, in Caribou, Maine. Collins attended Caribou High School, where she was president of the student council. Following graduation, Collins worked as a legislative assistant to the U.S. Representative, and later U.S. Senator William Cohen from 1975 to 1987. Collins was elected to the United States Senate in the 1996 senate election. She was later re-elected in every election thenceforth.
