William Henry Cosby Jr. is an American retired stand-up comedian and actor. Cosby began his career as a stand-up comic at the hungry i in San Francisco during the 1960s. Cosby rose to prominence in September 1984 with the debut of The Cosby Show. He played a major role in the development of a more-positive portrayal of Blacks on television.
Cosby was born on July 12, 1937, in Philadelphia. From a young age, his sense of humour was appreciated. He was known to be the class clown. His reputation was tarnished by dozens of accusations of sexual assault over the course of many decades and most notably during the MeToo movement. In 2018 he was found guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman, but his conviction was overturned three years later.
