Fredrick Allen Hampton was an American activist and revolutionary socialist. He was the deputy chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s. He also founded the Rainbow Coalition, a prominent multicultural political organization. Hampton is regarded as one among the most inspiring, articulate, and effective leaders in Chicago. However, to civic leaders in Chicago, the FBI, and others in the system, he was considered a dangerous revolutionary leader.
Hampton was born on August 30, 1948, in present-day Summit, Illinois, and grew up in Maywood, both suburbs of Chicago. Through his involvement with the NAACP, Hampton hoped to achieve social change through community organizing and nonviolent activism.
