Kratos cares not for humanity or for the Gods. All he could see ahead was his vengeance. Even as Athena lay dying and begged for him to stop and not kill Zeus for that would be the end of Olympus, Kratos did not care for her words. He was hell-bent on ending the reign of the gods.

Our lives are moulded by our human experiences and the people that come into our lives. Kratos believes he has become a monster due to the wrong-doings of the Gods. His thirst for vengeance is what has led him to be the monster that he is today.

Is it possible for us to move on from our past transgressions and change to be better people? This is one question that God of War concerns itself with. Athena sure believes it is beyond Kratos to change and run away from his past.

Kratos is an unthinking killing machine who will do anything to pursue his quest for vengeance, bloodshed, and further violence. He would go to any lengths to get his revenge and destroy Zeus for what he had done to him.

The God of War, Ares, tricked Kratos into killing his own family. All Kratos had in his mind from then on was revenge and redemption. He would go to any lengths, even destroy Olympus if need be, to murder Ares and exact his revenge.

An apology never suffices if there is no effort done to be better. Rather than superficially repenting for your mistakes, one should strive to be better and right the wrongs they have done. This is the lesson that Kratos teaches Atreus.

When Atreus implies that Kratos doesn’t truly care about Faye’s death and blames him for being shallow and indifferent, Kratos loses his temper revealing that he is truly affected by the death of his wife. This is an important moment of character development as it shows that beneath the raging fire and vengeful hunger, there is a grieving man (Or Demigod) who cares for his family.
10 Close your heart to their desperation, Close your heart to their suffering, Do not allow yourself to feel for them, They will not feel for you. -Kratos
As Atrues and Kratos embark on their journey, Kratos warns him of what they shall face. From heartless monsters to desperate men. He asks Atreus to keep a stone-heart and not feel for those who they shall come across in their journey. The world of God of War is wretched, cruel and heartless and only an equally heartless person can survive such a world.

The higher you keep your expectations, the more you will be disappointed. One should learn to keep their expectations grounded and not fly too high.

The truth can never be buried for long. Like a spectre, it always crawls out of its grave to haunt those who fear it. However far you run from it, it doesn’t change the truth. Such is the nature of truth and Athena knows this very well.

Kratos became a monster due to the raging fire of vengeance that burned within him. If he was a monster, he is one of the Gods’ making. And as Athena tells him that he shall always remain a monster thenceforth, however much he tries to deny, Kratos, in a moment of character development, refuses to be manipulated by her anymore and frees himself from her grasp.
14 A true warrior does not hide, Poseidon, Leave the sea, and face me. -Kratos
Kratos fears no one, not even the Big Three of the Olympian gods. In the now iconic fight, Kratos taunts Poseidon to rise from the sea and face him. What ensues is a never before seen fight between an undefeated and fearless killing machine, Kratos, and a massive Poseidon who dwarfs the puny size of Kratos.
15 A choice from the gods, is as useless as the gods themselves. -Kratos
Kratos sees the gods as stupid and unworthy of all the glory that they enjoy. Kratos, upon being betrayed by Zeus, speaks of their arrogance. The Gods have little respect for others, whether they’re humans or deities. They will always have their way and any choice they present is just an illusion.

Kratos has risen above the petty control of the gods. He goes as far as to wage war against them and destroy all those who stand in his way. The gods are but a mild annoyance and they do not control his fate anymore.

Kratos was a war machine all his life. In a moment of redemption, he accepts the fact that he has killed too many people in the span of his lifetime, some who were deserving while others who were undeserving.
18 We Win Because We Are Determined, Disciplined, Not Because We Feel Ourselves Superior. -Kratos
Victory comes not to those who look down upon others but those who are determined, disciplined and hungry for victory. When Atreus learns of the fact that he is part god, he becomes too full of himself, looking down upon “little people”. But he is sobered up when all thanks to Kratos. Atreus finally understands that being a god is not about feeling superior, it’s about being responsible with the power he’s been given.
19 Who I was is not who you will be. -Kratos
As their journey comes to a close, Kratos tells Atreus of his own violent past. A bewildered Atreus asks Kratos if he is doomed to follow the same path as his father. Kratos has learned from his journey that fate can surely be changed. Kratos tells Atreus to be better and not walk in his footsteps.

The truth is what sets us free. It liberates us for without the truth, we are imprisoned by illusions and lies. Mimir asks Kratos to inform his son, Atreus, of his godhood as only then will he truly be whole and free.
