When being asked for a reason as to why he did all that he did, the Joker reminds Batman that all his life, not one thing he’s ever done has had a reason behind it. He did things just for the sake of it. He was the true master of chaos, a real madman.

After descending from space and realising the full extent of what he’s done, Superman takes time to process everything that happened. He had his wife, his unborn child and his entire city taken from him. And he blames himself for it. It is this guilt that throws him down a path of madness and chaos.

After Lois’ death and the incineration of Metropolis, Superman vows to change the world forever. He decides ideals and principles are indeed fragile. The values that he was holding onto for so long could not safeguard the lives of the people in his city. He was adamant to not let that happen again.

Superman was done with playing by human rules. He held back for so long and all that led to was the death of his wife, his unborn child and eleven million people from his city. He was going to stop all wars and enforce peace with fear and force. Every person who dares to even think of hurting another had to be scared of the consequences. Only then, he believed, could peace be a reality.

Superman’s code was to never take a life on his own. He used to believe that no person had the right to take another’s life. But he broke that code when he murdered the Joker.
