Robert Nesta Marley, was a Jamaican singer, songwriter, and musician. Deeply regarded as one of the pioneers of reggae music, a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the 1960s. Marley’s contributions to music increased the visibility of Jamaican music worldwide, and made him a global figure in popular culture for over a decade. He was engulfed in controversy throughout his career due to his outspoken support for the legalisation of marijuana.
Born on February 6, 1945, in St. Ann Parish, Jamaica, Marley helped introduce reggae music to the world and remains one of the genre’s most beloved artists to this day. In 1963, Bob Marley and his friends formed the Wailing Wailers. The group attained international success after the release of the albums Catch a Fire and Burnin’. Following the disbandment of the Wailers a year later, Marley went on to release his solo material and received massive praise. He passed away in Miami, Florida, on May 11, 1981, leaving behind a legacy that is still respected and celebrated today.
